This is an ongoing study of if it works. We’re going to put a ton into it and see whether the work trickles back or hits us like a tsunami! (I spelled tsunami right first try:)

Why are we reviewing a new social networking site?

• It’s new enough to see if being the first to the plate is all it’s cracked up to be
• Thumbtack seemed pretty simple to setup
• It’s local and it looks pretty good at first glance
• MOST IMPORTANTLY  –> In order to full utilize thumbtack to its greatest potential we have to put all of the links, ads and galleries you are about to see somewhere… Why? because thumbtack uses a point system. The more you pimp it, the more it pimps you (or so they say in their walk-through)

What’s it used for?

Thumbtack.com is essentially a one stop shop for finding people that can do stuff for you. Whether it’s design a website (us), mow your lawn (not us), style your hair, fix your car, paint your home, or offer you high-end litigation services, Thumbtack should have that person available to you locally.

Now apparently you can request services too ( like craigslist), I’m not sure where they go when you do… After researching it seems that if you post a request for services a personal concierge named Heather helps you.

How do you offer services?

It’s pretty simple. You setup a profile, fill in your skills, and post an add for the service you offer. Your ad shows your hourly rate, where you’ll do the service, what it offers, and past referrals from people who have utilized your services in the past.

How do people know your serious?

So far I haven’t seen any indication that it’s not as risky as CraigsList. You do have the ability to achieve different levels of status which shows that you actively use the service. Gold status being the highest. However, I reached the highest status the site offers just by writing the post your reading… You see, the little widgets on this page give me points. Just by placing them here I look like a more professional service at thumbtack.com.  If I was offering litigation services and managed to get the highest service rating by writing this post someone may misunderstand how I achieved such a remarkable reputation on the site

It’s a little hokey, but it’s a new site and a new idea.

Custom Widget - Their Custom widget works well.  They give you the option to pick a certain size, color, modify the description and make a nice bold closing remark.  Time to setup and install ( 40 seconds )

Latest News Widget – I may be slow but this one took me a little bit to get setup right. Basically it has a news option that just allows you to post a tweet that can be sent over to twitter.  (time to setup and install 10 minutes… couldn’t find where to do it on the site.)

Photo Slideshow – Thumbtack allows you to upload and apparently  unlimited amount of photos showcasing your work. At first I was shocked. Then I saw the image compression settings that they are using. If you look at the images below you’ll notice that the image quality is shitty. That wasn’t my doing, I pride myself in creating crisp images. What happens is you upload your photo and they downsize it wayyyy to small. But hey, it’s free.
